Kaitiaki of Others -Have you filled a bucket today?

We have been learning about being Kaitiaki (kind and caring) to others.
We read the story  - Have you filled a bucket today. This gave us lots to think about.

We identified ways that we could fill people's buckets to make them feel good and to make us feel good too!

We decided to make a chocolate slice to take home to share with our whanau. We invited Nga Ringa to join us too. We had fun working with this class.

We cooked it in the oven. Then made icing for it. We put sprinkles on the top too.

We also decorated cards and wrote to our whanau at home. We wrote about how they do nice things for us at home.

When we wrapped up our slice and took them home. We couldn't wait to share them with our whanau.

Hope you enjoyed them whanau :)

Playdough

Making Play dough.
Nag Ringa came to visit our class so we could make play dough for our classes together.
First we had to read the recipie.

Then we had turns at adding the ingredients.

We had to be Kaitiaki of ourselves and wait patiently for our turns even though we were very excited and couldn't wait!

We were Kaitiaki of others when we made sure that everyone got a turn at stirring the play dough.

When we had finished cooking we had to divide the play dough evenly between the people in the group. If there was 4 tamariki in our group we divided the play dough into quarters. This was 4 even pieces.

If there was 3 tamariki in our group we had to divide it into thirds. This was 3 even pieces.

Then we had lots of fun playing with our new play dough.

Once we had finished we were Kaitiaki of our environment and gave our class a good tidy up.

Once we were tidy we did some writing about our colourful and sticky play dough.
What lots of fun we are having while learning.

Bubbles

Bubbles

What a fun way to start the year. We read a shared book about bubbles. Then we read it by our selves. We got some bubble mixture and went outside with Nga Ringa. We had lots of fun trying to catch the bubbles. Some went up very high. Some landed on us and POPPED!

After this we went back to class and wrote about bubbles.
We are authors.

What a fun day had by all.

Ukulele

We have been learning to play percussion instruments and play the ukulele.
We are practising for our school production.

The egg experiment

This was our experiment

Predict what you think will happen if we put an egg in a glass of water.
Put the egg in a glass of water.
Observe what happens.

Stir lots of salt into another glass of water.
Predict what will happen when you put an egg in this glass.
Observe what happens.
Why do you think this happened.

We used the Mangonui Learning Process for this learning.

  • Being curious
  • Collecting information
  • Connecting information
  • Creating
  • Communicating ideas.

We wondered what would happen when we put an egg in the water.
some ideas were:

  • it would explode.
  • it would crack
  • a chicken would come out.
We collected information by observing what happened.
  • The egg sank to the bottom
  • We stirred in lots of salt.
  • The salt disappeared. It dissolved into the water.
We connected information.
  • We realise that even though we cant see the salt it is still in the water.
  • We think that it is the salt that is holding the egg up.
  • The egg is floating.
We created and communicated out learning by writing, drawing and talking about what we observed and why we think it happened.

We love science!

Trip to the star dome and the gym

Pukeko and Nga Ringa Awhina went for a trip into town. To extend our learning about Matariki we visited the star dome at the Te Ahu centre. We got to see images of stars and constellations on the roof of the dome.

We even got to hold a meteorite. This one has come from millions of miles away from outside our solar system.
While we were at Te Ahu centre we visited the library and had a quick look at the museum.

Next we visited the gymnasium in Kaitaia. What a fun place to exercise, play and explore!!

Then we enjoyed out lunch at the park. What an education, adventurous and funfilled day we all had!
